Multicultural Christmas Festival
On 17.12.2017, The African, the Roma and the Ukrainian communities in Bratislava with the assistance and support of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) and the Old City of Bratislava municipality, organized a Multicultural Christmas Festival under the project name Multikultúrny festival "Zažime Vianoce spolu". The event took place in Bratislava Old town. The program began at 14:00 o'clock at the courtyard of Zichy Palace. Participants were welcomed at the entrance of the courtyard by a varied scent of African, Roma and the Ukrainian cuisine. The participants had the option to taste traditional delicacies from the three communities and attend a workshop aimed at highlighting how these three communities celebrate their Christmas. The African community had the opportunity to present food from Nigeria and Kenya. Participants were also introduced to popular African clothing, jewelry, and art products. The official program at the Zichy Palace ended at 17 o'clock, the visitors and organizers of the event later moved to Hviezdoslav Square, where each community presented their traditional songs or dances. Matata band a group comprising of African immigrants in Slovakia with their painted faces depicting African warriors danced to traditional African music leading to joy and excitement from the participants. The festival helped fulfill the purpose of African cultural, information and integration center (AKIIC) in providing creative and responsive programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, and enable African immigrants to successfully integrate within the majority community.
